Nogales, Arizona sits on the international border that separates the United States and Mexico. With a population of 28,000, the city serves as both the economic capitol and the seat of Santa Cruz County, Arizona’s smallest county. Founded in 1880, Nogales’s initial growth and prosperity were tied to the railroad and international trade, mining, and ranching and a military build-up brought on by the Mexican revolution.
Today, international commerce is of vital importance to the Nogales economy. Mexican shoppers crossing the border on a daily basis generate over 60% of Nogales’ sales tax. Nogales, Arizona and its sister city, Nogales, Sonora, are home to one of the largest cooperative manufacturing (maquiladora) clusters and the largest port of entry for Mexican produce—over four billion pounds of fruits and vegetables enter through the Mariposa port on an annual basis.
Located at the end of Interstate 19, Nogales provides easy access to southeastern Arizona on Highway 82 and Mexico on State route 289.
