Greater Nogales and Santa Cruz County Port Authority (GNSCCPA)
The mission of the newly created Port Authority is to coordinate and focus the efforts and resources of private industry and local government with the purpose of making the international ports of entry located in Santa Cruz County the most efficient and effective of all the ports on the U.S. Mexico border in an effort to enhance international trade, economic development, and tourism.
Comprised of members from local industries, Santa Cruz County, and the City of Nogales, the Port Authority, a 501(c) (6) non-profit organization, is working to obtain state and federal support in an effort to meet three main objectives:
· improve local port facilities
· streamline the crossing process at the border
· enhance economic development in the Santa Cruz County region
Here’s a quick look at the facts:
· Nogales is a significant international trading hub. Nogales is positioned at the core of the CANAMEX trade corridor connecting Western Canada with Mexico’s Pacific Coast and Mexico City. In 2003, 4.1 million vehicles, both commercial and noncommercial, crossed from Nogales into Arizona.
· The Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales is one of the largest ports of entry for fruit and vegetables in the U.S. For the calendar year 2003, total U.S. imports of fresh produce grown in Mexico were roughly 8.1 billion pounds valued at more than $3 billion. The majority, around 4 billion pounds, entered through Nogales.
· Thousands of jobs depend on our ports. Economic activity associated with the Mexican produce industry is the single largest private-sector employer in Nogales and Santa Cruz County. Twelve thousand jobs in Arizona and thousands more across the U.S. depend on the function of the Mariposa Port and the entire trade-flow process.
