Culture

Nogales is a truly unique city, one that maintains both an international flavor and the essence of small-town hospitality. Locals use the term Ambos Nogales (meaning "both Nogales") to describe the bi-national community. And though Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora are divided by an international border, our communities are united by our families and mixed cultures.

Karam Park, located in the heart of downtown, is still an oasis where local residents from both sides of the border gather to sit and visit with one another. On any major holiday, visitors can enjoy parades featuring high school marching bands, fire trucks, Folklorico dancers and Mariachi music. Tasty treats featuring traditional American fare and authentic Mexican recipes alike can be had for the asking at any of our wonderful restaurants, diners, and roadside snack bars.

Our rich historyþuwoven the cattle ranching, military, transportation, retail and wholesale trade, and mining industriesþuis widely reflected in our culture. It can be tasted in any of our many restaurants, viewed in the colorful shop windows on Morley Avenue or in the art display at the Hilltop Gallery, heard it in the breakfast conversations at Zula's or in the night music at Los Baldes, and palpably felt during a visit to the Primeria Alta Historical Society.
Architectural buffs will have a veritable heyday in Nogales. The Sonoran Style predominates here, but we also have fine examples of Queen Anne Cottage, Second Empire, Spanish Colonial, Pueblo Revival, Mediterranean Style, and Bungalow Style dotting the landscape of our downtown area. You'll definitely want to bring along your walking shoes to be sure to take it all in.

Venture east from Nogales and you'll discover Kino Springs Golf Resort, named after Padre Kino, a Spanish explorer who took refuge here. Founded in 1807 through the Estancia Yerba Buena Spanish Land Grant, the property once belonged to Stewart Granger and was a secret playground to stars such as John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Eva Gardner, and Elizabeth Taylor. Today, Kino Springs is a golf enthusiast's paradise that offers world-class bird watching. Set against the backdrop of incredible high desert and mountain views, Kino Springs Golf Course is situated on an expansive 5,500 acres along the meandering Santa Cruz River.
